Should I get an early pregnancy scan?

Whilst you may get a positive pregnancy test before your period is even due it is a couple of weeks before the pregnancy is big enough to be seen on scan. In the early weeks how much we can see in very early pregnancy is different for every woman and every pregnancy. At 4 weeks gestation 2 weeks after conception when you have just missed your period we cannot detect the pregnancy on scan, all we can see is that the lining of the womb has become thicker. Somewhere between 4 and 5 weeks, we can sometimes see a small black fluid area in the uterus but we cannot confirm it is a pregnancy sac until we can see something growing inside it. During the 5th week we can usually see a small pregnancy sac around 6mm and within it we can usually see a yolk sac. This confirms to us that this is definitely a pregnancy sac. Even at 6 weeks we sometimes struggle to see the baby and its heart beat even when things are going fine. At 6 weeks the baby measures approx.

Bleeding in early pregnancy

Obstetric ultrasonography , or prenatal ultrasound , is the use of medical ultrasonography in pregnancy , in which sound waves are used to create real-time visual images of the developing embryo or fetus in the uterus womb. The procedure is a standard part of prenatal care in many countries, as it can provide a variety of information about the health of the mother, the timing and progress of the pregnancy, and the health and development of the embryo or fetus.

The International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology ISUOG recommends that pregnant women have routine obstetric ultrasounds between 18 weeks’ and 22 weeks’ gestational age the anatomy scan in order to confirm pregnancy dating, to measure the fetus so that growth abnormalities can be recognized quickly later in pregnancy, and to assess for congenital malformations and multiple pregnancies twins, etc.

Performing an ultrasound at this early stage of pregnancy can more accurately confirm the timing of the pregnancy, and can also assess for multiple fetuses and major congenital abnormalities at an earlier stage. There is no difference, however, in perinatal death or poor outcomes for infants. Below are useful terms on ultrasound: [4].

Early pregnancy roughly spans the first ten weeks of the first trimester. be identifiable on endovaginal ultrasound ( mm); fetal heart rate (FHR) should be ~ weeks. crown rump length (CRL) should be ~5 mm. weeks The earlier in pregnancy a scan is performed, the more accurate the age assignment.

At 5 weeks into pregnancy things are so small there is very little to see on ultrasound. Even at 6 weeks it can be difficult to see an embryo with some people. We say 5 weeks plus because without being able to measure the embryo, we can only measure the mean sac diameter which is a combination of 3 measurements of the sac to gather an approximate date, but it isn’t as accurate and measuring the embryo.

At this point we can see the dark area with a small circle inside. The dark area is the gestation sac and the small white circle is called a yolk sac. The job of the yolk sac is to provide the growing embryo with nutrients until the placenta takes over later on into pregnancy. With only a yolk sac to see, we can confirm that the pregnancy is in the right place or not ectopic. The image above is now showing a 6 week pregnancy at this point is is possible to see the embryo and measure the gestational age quite well, but it is not always possible to see a heartbeat at this time.

If the heartbeat is not visible it can cause a lot of worry waiting to scanned again in a week or so time so it’s always best to avoid this situation from occurring. This is why, at Early Life Ultrasound centre we offer early pregnancy scans from 7 weeks. In this image the embryo is now 7 weeks measures approximately 10mm from head to bottom or crown to rump. There is a yolk sac but it can’t be seen in this particular image.
