Dating The Books Of The New Testament

Skeptical New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman offers a brief look at how many Bible scholars estimate when the Gospels were written. These estimates are very popular, and not just among skeptical scholars. Many conservative scholars accept them as well. My own view is that they are too late by a couple of decades, but Ehrman correctly reports their popularity in the scholarly community. Before trying to assign dates to particular Gospels, it can be helpful to try to identify a broader range of years in which they were composed. To begin with, none of the Gospels appears to have been known to the apostle Paul, writing in the 50s. This point is largely fair. He does echo a lot of things we find in the Gospels, but that could be due—and likely is due—to his use of oral tradition about Jesus. Luke was a travelling companion of Paul Acts , , , ; cf. When it came time to write his Gospel, he likely used the Pauline version of the words of institution that he was familiar with.

13 Good Historical Reasons For The Early Dating of The Gospels

As Easter season arrives each year, national attention turns toward the Resurrection of Jesus. Sadly, most news outlets treat Jesus skeptically during this important Christian season, challenging if he truly lived and if he rose from the grave. true of the four Gospels. It is usually claimed that Mark was the first gospel written around A.D. The Gospel of John is given a composition date in the 90’s.

When a person puts up a tent, the first stake placed in the ground largely determines the location of the entire tent. Dating the New Testament works in much the same way. Because there are many connections between New Testament books, moving the date of one book tends to drag the dates of a number of other books along with it. Therefore, it is important to decide which book ought to be the first stake, and where on the timeline that stake should be placed. Most modern scholarship identifies the gospel of Mark as the earliest gospel, setting Mark down as the first stake for the tent and working from there.

There are good reasons for doing this. However, there is also a problem with using Mark as the first stake, which we discuss in the article on Mark. For now, let us set Mark to the side. I believe that instead of Mark, the first stake should be the book of Acts. Acts is the second of two books written by Luke, so setting a date for Acts also serves to establish the latest possible date for the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of Luke is closely related to the other synoptic gospels, Matthew and Mark, and will influence our view on their dates as well.

Also, Acts describes in detail the three missionary journeys of Paul.

When the New Testament was written is a significant issue, as one assembles the overall argument for Christianity. Confidence in the historical accuracy of these documents depends partly on whether they were written by eyewitnesses and contemporaries to the events described, as the Bible claims. Negative critical scholars strengthen their own views as they separate the actual events from the writings by as much time as possible.

For this reason radical scholars argue for late first century, and if possible second century, dates for the autographs [original manuscripts]. By these dates they argue that the New Testament documents, especially the Gospels, contain mythology. The writers created the events contained, rather than reported them.

There are plenty of clues within the New Testament texts themselves that can inform us as well. One such clue is the omission of some very significant events that were highly relevant to the Gospel accounts.

Regarding how much writing there was in the earliest decades of Christianity, we should keep in mind that Paul’s letters and other early sources refer to a lot of documents that aren’t extant. According to this theory, the sources of the gospels underwent extensive creative oral development before commitment to writing. Other issues aside, many NT scholars date the Pauline letters much earlier than the Gospels, yet if Christians could write letters in the 40ss, there’s nothing to inhibit them from writing Gospels in the 40ss.

Less time for oral history means less time for legends to develop, and this points to a more reliable gospel message. I must confess that the conservative calculations sound reasonable in parts.

This thinking places at least some of the gospels well before the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple in 70 CE. And note the juggling that Wallace must do.
